New ID checking guidelines to align with Right to Work checks


These new guidelines were introduced on 24 October 2017 and they were running in parallel with previous guidelines until the 25 January 2018 when the previous guidelines ceased to apply. These new guidelines apply to all applications for Standard and Enhanced DBS checks.

Employers must prevent illegal working in the UK by carrying out document checks on people before employing them to make sure they are allowed to work. All employers and employees involved in the DBS ‘s ID checking process must be aware of these changes. These changes tighten up the document requirements for non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals who are applying for DBS checks for paid work so that they are consistent with the existing Right to Work document list. According to the new guidelines, applicants who are non-EEA nationals must be able to show 1 primary document and 2 supporting documents. If an applicant is unable to provide the required documentation they can’t submit a DBS check, as their right to work in the UK can’t be established.
